Kris Dowell was my roommate in college and my little brother in my fraternity. Years after we graduated from college we ended up in the same town in Texas. Kris was diagnosed with leukemia and bravely fought the disease for 3 years. After going through 2 bone marrow transplants and chemotherapy he called me on the phone and said, “I’m going to die.” The words cut through me like a knife. I went to visit him 2 days before he died and we had a conversation that I will never forget. He told me that, “Life is not about the money or the job. Life is about your family and the people you love.” He also told me, “Don’t feel sorry for me. Teri (his wife) and I have grown closer over the past 3 years than we were the previous 15. This wouldn’t have happened without the leukemia.” I always wanted to write a song for Kris but could never find the write approach until a heard a sermon from my pastor where he said, “You will never see a U-haul trailer on the back of a hearse.” I brought this hook into a writing session with Randy Finchum and Toni Dae. Toni passed away about a year after we completed this song. When I sing this song I see pictures of my dear friends who have died and gone to heaven, and I remember Kris’s words.
